Storage Terms

Storage Terms - Crest Self Storage

Last updated: 14 October 2026

When you store with us you sign a Self Storage Licence Agreement with Crest Self Storage Limited. That signed agreement is the contract between us. This page explains its main points in plain English so you know where you stand before you sign. You will get a copy of your agreement, and we are happy to talk any of it through with you at reception or on 01786 234111.

1. Who you are dealing with

Crest Self Storage Limited, trading as Crest Self Storage, a company registered in Scotland (company number SC586795). Registered office and facility: Unit 10 Springkerse Trade Park, Craigleith Road, Stirling FK7 7GN. VAT number GB291294191.

2. A licence to store, not a lease

Your agreement gives you a licence to store your goods in the unit we allocate to you. It is not a lease or tenancy, and it does not make us your landlord. We do not take possession of your goods or look after them for you, and we do not know what you store. We keep control of the building and the units.

We may need to move you to another unit that is at least the same size. We will give you 14 days' notice, unless an emergency means a unit has to be closed sooner, and we will pay reasonable removal costs that we have agreed in writing beforehand. If you do not want to move, you can end your agreement instead.

Unit sizes are approximate. If you have exact requirements, check with us before you sign.

3. How long you store and giving notice

Your storage runs in 7-day periods and carries on automatically until you or we end it. There is no minimum term beyond the first 7 days and no maximum.

You or we can end the agreement by giving at least 7 days' notice in writing. You can give notice by email to info@crestselfstorage.co.uk, by post, or by hand at reception. We can end the agreement straight away if the unit is used for anything illegal or environmentally harmful, or if a breach of the agreement is not put right within 14 days of us asking.

By the end date you must remove everything from the unit and leave it clean and undamaged.

If you signed up without visiting us in person, you have a 14-day cooling-off period after we accept your order. If you cancel in that period, you pay only for the days you have stored.

4. Fees and payment

  • Storage is charged weekly and paid in advance. You can pay weekly or for longer blocks of weeks at a time.
  • Prices on our website include VAT. Your agreement shows fees before VAT, with VAT added.
  • If a payment is late or cancelled, a late payment fee applies of £10 or 10% of your weekly storage fee, whichever is greater.
  • Other charges may apply where they are shown on your agreement: a fee if a Direct Debit or bank transfer fails, a key or fob deposit, a cleaning fee if the unit is left dirty or items are left behind (depending on what is left), the cost of repairing any damage, and our reasonable costs of recovering unpaid fees.
  • We do not normally take a deposit. If we do, it will be shown on your agreement and refunded within 21 days of your agreement ending, less anything you owe us.
  • We can change our fees or terms by giving you at least 28 days' notice in writing. If you do not want to accept the change, you can end your agreement without charge before it takes effect.

5. Refunds

The first week is non-refundable. After that, any weeks paid in advance beyond your 7-day notice period are refunded when you leave. If you signed up without visiting us, you also have a 14-day cooling-off period, during which you only pay for the days you've stored. Special offers have their own terms, shown with the offer.

6. Insurance

Your goods must be insured for their full replacement value as new for the whole time they are in storage. You have two options.

Option 1: StoreProtect

We can include your goods under our own self storage insurance policy. This is not a sale of insurance, and you do not have a contract with our insurers. Our insurers are Glemham Underwriting Limited and Aviva Insurance Limited, and our broker is Pound Gates. The main points of the cover are:

  • It covers loss or damage caused by fire, lightning, explosion, storm, flood, escape of water, theft following forcible entry, and the other events listed in our summary of cover.
  • The first £250 of every claim is not covered (the excess).
  • You must tell us about a claim in writing within 7 days of finding the loss or damage.
  • The cover is based on the value you declare. If your goods are worth more than you declare, any claim will be reduced in proportion, so please do not under-insure.
  • The charge depends on the value you declare. Ask us for a quote.

A summary of the cover is available at reception or by email on request.

Option 2: Your own insurance

You can use your own insurance instead, as long as it covers goods held in self storage at our address for their full replacement value. Many home contents policies do not cover goods in self storage, even when they cover items away from home, so please check your policy carefully. We will ask to see proof of cover. Seeing your documents does not mean we have checked that the cover is adequate, and it is your responsibility to keep it in place.

7. Our responsibility for your goods

Your goods are stored at your own risk. We are not responsible for loss or damage to your goods unless it is caused by our negligence or breach of the agreement. If you do not have StoreProtect, our total liability in that case is limited to £100. We are not liable for loss of business, profits or other indirect losses, or for events outside our reasonable control.

We never limit or exclude our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law.

8. Access and security

  • You can access the building 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using your own access code. Our office is open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm.
  • Only you, and people you authorise and take responsibility for, may access your unit. We may ask anyone for proof of identity.
  • You secure your unit with your own padlock and must keep it locked. Please do not use the overlocking position on the door, which is reserved for us.
  • We may restrict access if money is owed, or if the safety or security of people, units or goods is at risk.
  • We may enter your unit, breaking the lock if we need to: on at least 7 days' notice for inspections or repairs; without notice in an emergency; if we believe prohibited goods are stored; if we are required to by law, the police, the fire service or another authority; or to exercise our rights if fees are unpaid.

9. What you can and cannot store

You must not store, or allow anyone else to store:

  • living creatures of any kind
  • food or perishable goods, unless securely packed so they cannot attract pests
    - anything combustible or flammable, including gas, paint, petrol, oil, solvents and compressed gases
  • firearms, weapons, ammunition or explosives
  • chemicals, toxic, radioactive or other hazardous materials, or asbestos
  • anything that gives off fumes or smells
  • anything illegal or illegally obtained, including counterfeit or smuggled goods and unsafe or unlicensed products
  • anything environmentally harmful or that puts other people's property at risk
  • cash, deeds or securities, or items whose value to you cannot be measured in money

Batteries:

  • No loose lithium-ion batteries over 160 Wh, power banks or portable chargers.
  • No more than five e-scooters, e-bikes or similar battery-powered vehicles, unless the battery is removed and not stored in the unit.
  • No more than ten laptops, tablets, toys or similar items with built-in batteries. Items must be undamaged, not stacked, and stored with the lowest practical charge.
  • Batteries must not be charged in the unit.

Machinery such as lawnmowers, motorcycles, chainsaws and generators must be completely drained of fuel and oil before they come into the building.

Most units have standard-width doors, so pallets will not fit (except in our 175 sq ft unit), and goods must be movable by hand or on a trolley.

The unit is for storage only. You must not live or sleep in it, use it as an office or as a home, business or mailing address, use portable heaters, connect utilities, or make alterations.

10. If you do not pay

We take prompt payment seriously. Your agreement gives us a right of lien over the goods in your unit, which means we can hold them, and ultimately sell them, as security for what you owe. If a payment is missed:

  • We will contact you and send a reminder.
  • A late payment fee applies, and storage fees continue to build up, together with our costs of recovering the debt.
  • If the balance has not been cleared within 7 days, we may overlock your unit and disable your access code until it is paid.
  • If you had a discount or offer, the full value of it may become payable.
  • Before we sell or dispose of anything, we will write to you by recorded delivery and by email, asking you to pay. If we cannot reach you, we may contact the alternate contact person on your agreement.
  • If the debt is still not paid, we may open the unit and sell the goods for the best price reasonably available, or dispose of goods that cannot be sold or are not worth selling.
  •  Money from a sale goes first to the costs of removal and sale and then to your debt. If it does not cover everything, you must pay the balance within 7 days of our written demand. If there is money left over, we will return it to you or hold it for you.
  • We may record unpaid debts on the Storer Check database used by self storage operators.

11. Goods left behind

If goods are left in your unit after your agreement ends, we may treat them as abandoned. We will write to you asking you to collect them, and if you do not, we may sell or dispose of them in the same way as for unpaid fees. Storage fees continue until they are removed, sold or disposed of.

Items left in corridors, at the loading area or outside your unit may be moved or disposed of straight away. If goods are badly damaged by fire, flood or a similar event, or could contain personal data, we may dispose of them and will write to you within 7 days.

12. Your personal data

We collect and use personal data about you, and about the alternate contact person you name, to provide your storage. This includes identity and credit checks, including the Storer Check database, and CCTV and access records at the facility. Our Privacy Notice (https://www.crestselfstorage.co.uk/policies/privacy-policy) explains how we use it and your rights. Please keep your contact details up to date by telling us within 48 hours of any change.

13. Complaints and the law that applies

If something goes wrong, please speak to us first and we will try to put it right. If we cannot agree, we will both try mediation before going to court. Your storage agreement is governed by the law of Scotland, and the courts of Scotland have jurisdiction. Nothing on this page affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
